Biography
Karen has a wide range of experience as a commercial lawyer and has advised clients extensively on adopting the right structure for their circumstances. Given this experience, she can provide assistance in relation to a wide range of commercial matters, including partnership / shareholder / unitholder agreements, taxation advice and restructuring proposals.
Karen’s special interest and focus is on estate and succession planning matters, advising clients on the protection and passing of assets to desired beneficiaries and ensuring the most effective implementation of a client’s wishes with regard to estate planning matters.
She has had extensive experience in drafting Wills which appropriately address all issues relevant to achieving a client’s estate planning objectives, including the incorporation of testamentary discretionary trusts or superannuation proceeds trusts where relevant. In addition to the drafting of the Will, Karen ensures that all assets over which a client has control or influence are also dealt with appropriately as part of the overall estate planning process.
Karen also takes an active role in the firm’s elder law practice. In particular, she acted for numerous participants in the retirement village industry, being involved from the initial stages of a project through to the day to day operation of the village. She advises on compliance with both Queensland and New South Wales retirement village legislation, taking into account the commercial and practical considerations for operators.
