Biography
Michael is an experienced litigation and insolvency special counsel. He has worked on a broad range of issues, with particular expertise in banking and financial services litigation, in all courts including the Federal and Supreme Courts. Michael has acted for insolvency practitioners and banks in relation to all aspects of insolvency and recovery action. He has advised directors, insolvency practitioners and banks on director's duties, Corporations Act duties/compliance and causes of action for breaches of those duties, as well as preparing for and conducting examinations under the Corporations Act.
Michael has practiced in private firms and held in-house legal roles. Most recently he was the head of the dispute resolution group at Westpac Banking Corporation, responsible for the coordinated provision of litigation services to all of the bank's business units. Matters included enforcement claims, life insurance claims, professional indemnity claims, fraud and disputes with third party investors. Significantly, Michael was responsible for the conduct of litigation against the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department seeking to overturn assessments of the bank's taxation.
